National Volunteer Week will take place from 18 to 24 May
National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteering. This year's theme is 'Your Year to Volunteer'.
Our volunteers are the heart, soul, and lifeblood of our community. This week we are celebrating and recognising the vital work they work they do and the contribution that they make to Cumberland.

Why we are celebrating
The week-long event recognises the vital support that the millions of volunteers in our country provide to their communities and encourages people to consider volunteering. It’s a celebration of diverse passions and talents, emphasising that there’s a perfect role for each person in the world of volunteering. Whether it’s the environment, community, education, or more, there’s a place where everyone’s unique skills shine.
How we are celebrating
Cumberland City Council will be hosting a series of special events. These include a Volunteer Program Open Day on 18 May, an Effective Teamwork & Collaboration training session on 21 May, and a fun-filled Volunteer Game Day on 22 May.
Volunteer Milestone Awards
Cumberland City Council hosts the Volunteer Milestone Awards each year to recognise volunteers who have dedicated many years of service to the community.
This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate nine outstanding volunteers who have reached significant milestones in their volunteering journey. Five volunteers have achieved five years of service, while four have reached ten years. Their names will be announced in December in recognition of International Volunteer Day.
All award recipients are nominated for the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, organised by the Centre for Volunteering. They will be invited to attend an awards ceremony in September, where they will receive a certificate acknowledging their valuable contributions.
Award recipients and their volunteer supervisors will also be invited to the Gift of Time Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony. At this event, volunteers will be presented with a certificate and a gift from Council, in front of their fellow volunteers.
Volunteers play a vital role in delivering our everyday services, and we deeply appreciate the time, care, and dedication they bring to our community. Their kindness and commitment truly make a difference.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!
