
Vanessa McNeill was born in Dumfries, Scotland, on 9th May 1943 to James “Jim” and Mabel McNeill. Vanessa and her family moved back to Australia in about 1945. Vanessa attended Fowler Road Public School and Fairfield Girls’ High School. After graduating high school, Vanessa studied at the University of New South Wales to complete her library degree. She worked in libraries throughout the larger Sydney area.
Vanessa was elected as Councillor, representing the Australian Labor Party, in September 1991. That same year, Vanessa was elected Deputy Mayor of Holroyd City Council, the first woman to hold that position in the Council’s history.
During her twelve years in Council, Vanessa was a member of various Council Committees, including the Library Committee, Management Review Committee, and the Development, Community Services Committee, among many others. Throughout her career with Council, Vanessa earned a reputation for her involvement in community initiatives, heritage work, and her campaigns for improved facilities for the most vulnerable members of the community.
Vanessa was a tireless community contributor who worked or volunteered as a library assistant at Granville, Guildford, and Wentworthville libraries, and was an active member of St Mark’s Anglican Church in Guildford. Vanessa was also a long-standing supporter of the Friends of Linnwood, helping to secure the heritage-listed Linnwood House property for posterity.
Vanessa McNeill retired from Council in March 2004. She continued her community work until her death in October 2025.
